Toyota took the automotive world by storm when it released the Prius in 1997, showing that a hybrid gas-electric car was not only feasible but also commercially viable. The Prius went on to garner many awards, especially starting in 2003 with the radically futuristic hatchback design that was like nothing else on the road. Today, the 2022 Toyota Prius is part of the fourth generation of this amazing hybrid vehicle that combines the fuel economy benefits of a hybrid powertrain with the reduced emissions associated with operating on an electric motor at least part of the time. While its looks harken back to the radical redesign from 2003, the 2022 Prius is roomier than ever, with an all-new special edition to go along with the six different models to choose from.

What’s more, every 2022 Prius comes equipped with the Toyota Audio Plus infotainment system on a 7-inch touchscreen. This combines a six-speaker sound system with such connectivity features on Bluetooth, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay. This will help you and your passengers keep in touch no matter where you may go in your 2022 Toyota Prius. You also get a free 3-month trial of the SiriusXM platinum plan and a one-year trial of Toyota Connected Services – Safety Connect with your new Prius. Stay safe and connected in your Prius while you cruise the highways saving gas and trees along the way.

  • Trims

    The New Nightshade Edition

The biggest news about the 2022 Toyota Prius is the addition of the brand new Nightshade Edition to the lineup of this great hybrid. The Nightshade Edition gives you the choice of three different exterior color schemes: Midnight Black Metallic, Super White, and Silver Metallic. In addition, the 2022 Prius Nightshade Edition has a special SofTex-trimmed interior with heated front seats and a unique semi-gloss black center console. This model is offered in front-wheel drive with 17-inch alloy wheels and Toyota’s electronic on-demand compact all-wheel drive (AWD-e) with 15-inch alloy wheels.

Six Amazing Trim Options to Choose From

The Nightshade Edition joins the six other trim levels of the 2022 Prius. The base model is the L Eco, with an MSRP of $24,525.* The Prius LE adds a 4.2-inch color dual multi-information display, as well as intelligent clearance sonar with intelligent parking assist to make parking your Prius safer and easier. The LE AWD-e has many of the same features and utilizes Toyota’s AWD-e system.

The Prius XLE ups the luxury quotient on this hybrid with Qi-compatible wireless smartphone charging and a charge indicator light. The XLE AWD-e also utilizes the AWD-e drivetrain. The top trim level is the Limited, and this model pulls out all the stops. The Prius Premium includes SofTex-trimmed heated front seats, a color head-up display for increased convenience, and a premium JBL Audio system with integrated navigation on an 11.6-inch high-resolution touchscreen.

More Space Than You Might Expect

The 2022 Toyota Prius is surprisingly roomy for a compact hatchback. The designers have given the Prius over 93 cubic feet of space inside the passenger compartment, ensuring that all 5 passengers get enough legroom. Front-row passengers will enjoy getting 42.3 inches of legroom, while the rear seat passengers should be able to stretch out with 33.4 inches of space for their legs.

The decision by Toyota to go from a conventional four-door sedan to a hatchback in 2003 has paid off for the Prius. The 2022 Prius model will give you a solid 27.4 cubic feet of cargo space, plenty of room for most of your belongings, even luggage. When you have to move more stuff, the rear seat of the Prius easily folds down to free up a total of 50.7 cubic feet of cargo space.

    The Hybrid Powertrain

The 2022 Toyota Prius is a hybrid, meaning that it operates through a combination of gas and electric motors. The conventional part of the powertrain is a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder aluminum DOHC 16-valve gas engine. This engine features variable valve timing with intelligence and produces 95 horsepower and 105 pounds to feet of torque on its own.

The electric part of the powertrain is a permanent magnet AC synchronous motor connected to the front axle on all models except for those with AWD-e. This motor runs off of a 53 kW lithium-ion battery that produces 207.2 volts. The Prius with AWD-e has a permanent magnet AC synchronous motor for the front axle and a magnetless rear motor for the rear axle, giving this model all-wheel drive. The twin motors on the Prius AWD-e models run off a 53-kW sealed nickel-metal hybrid battery that produces 201.6 volts. When the electric motors on all Prius models are combined with the gas engine in the hybrid powertrain, it produces a total of 121 horsepower and 120 pound-feet of torque.

Toyota has always been about technological innovation, which is shown by how the Prius all but created the hybrid vehicle category. This is why Toyota has chosen to equip the Prius with an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (eCVT). Rather than have set gear speeds like on a conventional manual or automatic transmission, the eCVT constantly adjusts engine speed to driving conditions, making overall engine performance more efficient.

What the Prius Is Known For: Excellent Fuel Economy

The 2022 Prius gets exceptional gas mileage no matter which model you choose. The true champion in the fuel economy category is the Prius L Eco, which may be one of the most economical hybrid models on the road today with an exceptional estimated 58 miles per gallon in the city and 53 miles per gallon on the highway. The front-wheel drive Prius models, including the LE, XLE, Nightshade Edition, and Limited, will give you approximately 54 miles per gallon in city driving and 50 miles per gallon on the highway. The LE AWD-e, XLE AWD-e, and Nightshade Edition AWD-e trade a little fuel economy for the improved traction afforded by all-wheel drive. These models will give you 51 miles per gallon in the city and 47 miles per gallon in highway driving.

    Handling and Acceleration

As you may expect, the 2022 Prius is really fun to drive and handles very nimbly despite having a slightly long 106.3-inch wheelbase. This is especially so with those models equipped with the AWD-e drivetrain with its added traction courtesy of an additional motor attached to the rear axle. The only tradeoff with the AWD-e is a reduced acceleration of 0 to 60 miles per hour in 10.8 seconds. You will find Prius models with front-wheel drive to have improved acceleration over this number. All Prius models have a top speed of 104 miles per hour, so cruising on the highway will present no real problem. The 2022 Prius utilizes regenerative and friction braking to recharge its battery, much like other hybrid and electric vehicles. The front brakes are power-assisted ventilated disc brakes, while the rear features integrated regenerative disc brakes.

  • Safety

Toyota has made safety a priority on the 2022 Prius with a whole host of standard safety features. Every 2022 Prius comes equipped with Toyota’s Star Safety System. This includes such features as enhanced vehicle stability control to keep the Prius on the road, traction control to give your Prius better handling in inclement weather conditions, and anti-lock brakes to keep your Prius from hydroplaning in water. The Prius also has a full complement of airbags to reduce injury in the event of a collision.

    Toyota Safety Sense 2.0

Every 2022 Prius is also equipped with the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 suite of six different active safety features. The Pre-Collision System With Pedestrian Detection will take control of your vehicle’s brakes if the system detects an imminent collision with a pedestrian or other vehicle. This will help you avoid a crash or reduce the impact of a collision. Lane Departure Alert With Steering Assist will let you know if you are drifting out of your lane and use slight adjustments to the vehicle’s steering to keep your Prius in line.

Lane Tracing Assist acts in a similar way, helping your Prius track the shifts and bends in a marked highway. Automatic High Beams activate in areas of low light and then turn off when the system detects another vehicle to avoid distracting the other driver. Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control provides active speed adjustment automatically when you are in cruise control, adjusting to the traffic in front of your Prius. Finally, Road Sign Assist will work with the cruise control to make sure you and your Prius are observing all the speed limits and other alerts provided by the road signs along your way.

Toyota’s commitment to safety is shown by the fact that it has made all of these safety features standard in every model of the 2022 Prius. It has also paid off, as the Prius is one of the safest cars in its vehicle class. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration gave the Prius a 5-star overall safety rating based on its crash test performance.
