The Toyota Corolla is an iconic compact sedan that has graced over 44 million driveways since its launch back in 1966. In fact, over a span of twelve generations, the Corolla even once earned the distinction of the best-selling vehicle on the planet. The 2022 Toyota Corolla carries the torch, with a hybrid trim option and dozens of modern infotainment and safety technologies designed to keep owners happy, safe, and entertained.

Life as a Corolla owner means frequently driving past the gas station, thanks to class-leading fuel economy. Sure, the Corolla is offered with plenty of luxury-level niceties, but at its core, this sedan is designed for affordability and durability. Toyota places a heavy emphasis on quality, which means owners enjoy years of reliable, low-maintenance driving. Offered in nine trims that start at just a hair over $20,000, there’s a Corolla for every lifestyle, and even the base model L includes a long list of standard premium features that add value. For 2022, the lineup includes an exciting hybrid trim, as well as a smattering of special editions and equipment packages designed to help buyers custom tailor a Corolla to suit their individual needs.

Affordable Trims and a Fuel Efficient Hybrid

The 2022 Toyota Corolla comes in an eye-popping nine different trims ranging in price from the very low $20,000 range to nearly $30,000. With so many versions to choose from, understanding what’s included in each trim is a great way to start your shopping journey. From the nicely-equipped base L to the fully-loaded XSE Apex Edition, this lineup truly offers something for everyone.

The L, the LE, and the Hybrid LE

With standard LED headlights, a 7-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, and Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, a suite of driver-assist technologies all standard, we hesitate to refer to the Corolla L as a base model, especially with its starting MSRP of just over $20,000. It’s a great starter car that features equipment typically found in more expensive trims.

Next up, the LE and Hybrid LE feature a larger 8.0-inch touchscreen, automatic climate control, a remote keyless entry system that’s upgraded to include a push-button start on the Hybrid, and premium cloth seating surfaces. The Hybrid adds a 7-inch Multi-Information Display and High-grade LED headlights, along with two driving modes: Eco and Power. With an estimated fuel economy rating of 53 MPG city and 52 MPG highway, the Corolla Hybrid LE is a perfect choice for commuters.

The Mid-Range Corolla SE and XLE

If you’re looking for a few more creature comforts wrapped in a sportier package, we recommend checking out the SE. For a couple thousand dollars more, the SE includes steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters, a special gray metallic grille with LED accent lighting, 18-inch wheels, and premium sport seats. You’ll also get two driving modes: Normal and Sport.

The SE Nightshade Edition takes all the included features found on the SE and adds special blacked-out exterior trim accenting. These included blacked-out 18-inch alloy wheels, a black front bumper and grille surround, special side rocker panels that stretch back to meet a rear spoiler, and additional black accenting on the side mirror and door handles. The SE Nightshade also includes special black Toyota emblems.

Performance seekers will love the SE Apex Edition. Designed to deliver a sportier ride and appearance, the Apex Edition features a special Manual Transmission mode, bronze and black exterior accenting, a lowered sport-tuned suspension that’s combined with a sport-tuned exhaust system, interior bronze seat stitching, and the same blacked-out badging found on the SE Nightshade.

Upscale Refinement in the Corolla XSE and XSE Apex Edition

If your tastes run more toward the luxury end of the spectrum, Toyota has designed two top-of-the-line trims for your consideration. They differ from the entry and mid-range trims most substantially inside the cabin. Toyota took care to add features that not only contribute to adding comfort and convenience but also high-end luxury equipment commonly only seen on more expensive models, like the Camry.

The first is the Corolla XSE. The XSE is loaded with luxury and comfort features, including a power moonroof, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and automatic climate control with an integrated dust and pollen filter. The XSE also features heated front seats and an 8-way power driver’s seat.

Opt for the available Connectivity Package and outfit your Corolla XSE with premium 9-speaker audio, navigation, and a one-year subscription to Toyota’s Safety Connect connected services, and a trial subscription to SiriusXM satellite radio. The package also includes a handy wireless device charger. A second package, the Advanced Lighting Package, adds Adaptive Front Lighting and interior ambient lighting.

Sitting atop the Corolla lineup is the XSE Apex Edition. This fully-loaded entrant includes everything found on the XSE, plus the signature Apex trim’s bronze interior stitching and a specially tuned sport suspension. The same special exterior bronze/black trim accents found on the SE Apex Edition are also included here, giving the XSE Apex Edition a distinctive curb presence. It’s the perfect option for buyers seeking all the interior extras but still wanting a sportier exterior appearance.

  • Technology

Upscale Technology to Keep You Connected

Regardless of budget, today’s buyers demand next-level connectivity and access to smartphones while traveling. Toyota answers the call, equipping the Corolla with an available 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen. Floating centrally on the dash, the touchscreen is a gateway to streaming playlists and podcasts, as well as accessing optional features like navigation and connected services.

Speaking of connectivity, the Corolla is wired for connected services via the Toyota app, which turns your smartphone into a remote key and vehicle data hub. You can remotely locate your Corolla if you forget where you parked, as well as remote start, lock/unlock the doors, and view important vehicle diagnostic information right in the app. It’s a subscription-based service that’s well worth the price for the convenience it offers drivers.

The nifty Adaptive Front-Lighting System, available on the XSE, turns your headlights into tools for navigating dark corners and nighttime turns. The headlights actually turn in harmony with the steering wheel, lighting the path ahead and making after-dark navigation a lot safer. Adaptive Lighting is just one of the advanced safety systems available on the Corolla.

Keeping You Protected on Your Journey

All Corolla trims receive Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, a suite of semi-autonomous driver-assist systems that utilize cameras, radar, and sensors to continuously monitor the area around the vehicle and alert the driver of impending hazards. Systems include Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Automatic High Beams, Lane Tracing Assist, and Road Sign Assist.

Lane Tracing Assist is a unique feature that works together with Dynamic Radar Cruise Control to take feedback from lane markets and preceding vehicles to determine the center point of your intended lane of travel and help you stay there. Combined with Lane Keep Assist, the vehicle will send steering nudges when it senses the vehicle drifting out of the center part of its lane. Like any great co-pilot, Road Sign Assist actually detects speed limit signs, stop signs, and yield signs and displays them conveniently for the driver.
