2022 GR 86

  • Overview

The Toyota logo is shown against a white background.

After years of delays and rumors, Toyota has finally revealed details about the 2022 GR 86, which is the second generation of Toyota's entry-level sports car. Like the original, this lightweight rear-wheel-drive sports car was developed in conjunction with the Subaru. However, the new model boasts a more powerful 2.4-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine that offers 228 horsepower and is paired with a six-speed manual transmission; a six-speed automatic transmission is optional. One of the biggest consumer complaints with the first-generation Gr 86 was the lack of horsepower, and the 2.4-liter engine bests the old 2.0-liter engine by a considerable amount.

Toyota didn't release the GR 86 for the 2021 model year, but after a complete redesign, they are relaunching the model. The specs for the United States model are sure to impress any fan of the old Toyota 86, and Toyota has confirmed details about the power ratings, trim levels, and equipment. The new GR letters in the name of the 2022 model stand for Gazoo Racing, one of the brand's in-house tuning shops responsible for improving Toyota models for better performance. Those letters are there because GR has more than done its part to make the 2022 GR 86 the best yet.

  • Performance

A red 2022 Toyota GR 86 is shown from the front driving on a racetrack.

Under the hood of the 2022 Toyota GR 86, you will find a horizontally opposed 2.4-liter engine that was the result of collaboration between Toyota and Subaru. A horizontally opposed engine, also known as a Boxer engine, has the cylinders located on either side of the central crankshaft. There are several advantages to having a flat engine; they have better primary balance, which means they have less vibration, and they have a low center of gravity, which improves handling. This 2.4-liter engine cranks out 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, which are both an improvement over the previous model year's engine.

    Improved Acceleration

The old engine had a lot of get up and go; it would take about 7 seconds to get from zero to 60 mph. Since the 2.4-liter engine is more powerful, you can expect even better numbers. Toyota states that the zero to 60 numbers are 6.1 seconds with the manual transmission and 6.6 seconds with the automatic transmission. There haven't been any fuel-economy estimates for the 2.4-liter engine yet, but the last generation engine garnered 24 MPG in the city and 32 MPG on the highway. Of course, that is when the engine is paired with the automatic transmission, you won't get those numbers with the manual transmission.

    Crisp Handling

The automatic transmission employs adaptive controls that sense when you are applying the brake and accelerator, and it will shift to the optimal gear; this gives you ultimate control of the vehicle. The manual transmission features a redesigned gearbox that provides the driver with more control and smoother shifting. The manual transmission option promises a driving experience like no other.

The GR 86 is a racing car at heart, and thanks to the powerful engine, low center of gravity, and sleek design, you feel like you are on the track when you are driving it. With a curb weight of under 2,800 pounds, the GR 86 handles like a charm, and you will find that you don't ever want to stop driving it.

  • Interior

A race car driver is shown in the interior of a 2022 Toyota GR 86 driving behind a white 2022 Toyota GR Supra A91 CF Edition on a racetrack.

The 2022 GR 86 comes with an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which is slightly bigger than previous models. All models come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the system is compatible with SiriusXM satellite radio. You get six speakers with the base model, and the premium models enjoy eight speakers. There is also a standard 7.0-inch digital gauge display with Normal, Sport, and Track modes. In addition, the digital display shows a graphic of piston movement, which is pretty classy.

    A Practical Sports Car?

In the cabin, the front seats have been redesigned, and they are deep buckets with side bolsters to give you support while taking corners at insane speeds. Should you choose the Premium trim, the seats are upholstered with leather accents. The Premium trim also enjoys silver-colored accents, leather-trimmed touchpoints, and aluminum sport pedals. The GR 86 is a sports car; as such, the interior is small and cozy. But it is unique in the fact that it does have a back seat so that you can seat four passengers in a pinch. Granted, it is a tight squeeze, but it is still a nice touch. The small seats in the back even fold down and give you more cargo space. While you won't fit a canoe in the trunk, the added space is still a novel idea and will allow you to pack a few added necessities for your cross-country road trips.

    Reliable Safety

Like the previous generation, the 2022 GR 86 comes with Toyota's Star Safety System, which includes a plethora of safety features. This is a suite of six features designed to ensure you enjoy a safe ride in your Toyota. The system includes Traction Control (TRAC) that can sense when one wheel is turning faster than the one on the other side; this is an indication of a loss of traction. TRAC detects such slippage and reduces engine power until traction is regained. Smart Stop Technology (SST) is another safety feature, and it is designed to reduce engine power in an emergency. Finally, brake Assist (BA) detects panic braking and helps the driver stop the vehicle.

Additional safety features include Track Mode, Hill Start Assist Control, and Vehicle Stability Control, which is a system that helps prevent your wheels from slipping sideways when cornering. However, for drivers who utilize their sports cars for maximum drifting excitement and pleasure, you can turn off these features with the press of a button. Other features include Toyota's Smart Key System that includes Push Button Start.

  • Exterior

A red 2022 Toyota GR 86 is following a white 2022 Toyota GR Supra A91 CF Edition on a racetrack.

There have been a few exterior changes to the new generation GR 86, but they are subtle. The grille is a bit larger than the last generation, and it is flanked by air ducts, which is a nice touch. The front fenders are more prominent and feature additional venting behind the front wheels. There are changes to the rear as well. There is now an integrated ducktail spoiler that is part of the trunk lid, matching that of the Toyota Supra. You will also enjoy the new look of the taillights.

Both models feature LED headlights and taillights as standard equipment. The Premium trim features adaptive front lighting, which optimizes the distribution of light depending on circumstance. Basically, adaptive front lighting points the lights in the direction you are traveling. It makes taking winding roads in the middle of the night safer.

    Premium Upgrades

There are a few exterior differences between the base model and Premium trim. The base model enjoys two-tone diamond-turned 17-inch wheels with a black finish and Michelin Primacy HP all-season tires. The Premium trim features matte black 18-inch wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires. Both wheel types and tires are upgrades from the previous generation. But whether you choose the base model or Premium trim, both cars look fantastic, and you will not be disappointed. The 2022 Toyota GR 86 is available in several exterior colors, including Raven Black, Pavement Grey, Halo White, and Neptune Blue.

    Toyota Piece of Mind

All 2022 GR models come with ToyotaCare, which is a no-cost plan that features 24-hour roadside assistance for two years or 25,000 miles. The plan also covers routine factory-scheduled maintenance during that period. In addition, Toyota's 36-month/36,000-mile basic new-vehicle warranty covers all components other than maintenance items and consumables.

Learn to Drive at the Limit!

As a sweet bonus, every 2022 GR 86 owner will enjoy a complimentary one-year membership to the National Auto Sport Association (NASA). In addition, GR 86 owners are sure to enjoy attending one free High Performance Driving Event where they can learn to push their new car to the limit in controlled conditions.
