    Gas Engine and Fuel Economy

When you look at a compact crossover SUV, the engine might not be the first thing you consider due to its small size. While that is understandable, it is still worth looking at because you want a vehicle that is going to be fun to drive, even if it is a compact model. Fortunately, the 2021 Toyota RAV4 has a terrific engine that gives it sporty performance and great fuel efficiency.

All gas models (there are also a number of hybrid trims available) come with a 2.5L Dynamic Force 4-cylinder DOHC engine that delivers 203 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. Compared to a lot of other compact and small crossover models out there, that is a lot of power that really lets the RAV4 zip around on the road. Even other models with multiple engine options can still come up short compared to the standard engine in the RAV4.

This engine comes paired with an 8-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission that provides you with a smooth driving experience, whether you are just running errands around town or going on a long road trip. Front-wheel drive is standard on the 2021 Toyota RAV4, but all-wheel drive is available for certain trims. With its standard engine, fuel economy can vary slightly between trims, but most get around an estimated 28 MPG in the city, 35 MPG on the highway, and 30 MPG combined.

    Hybrid Engine and Fuel Economy

One of the most exciting things about the 2021 Toyota RAV4 is that it has a hybrid engine available for it. While this might not be unique among crossover SUV models in the auto industry, it means you have a lot more options when choosing a RAV4 to get exactly what you want. Best of all, you do not simply have one trim to choose from if you want the hybrid engine. There are five different hybrid trims available, so you can get the features and options you want while still getting an engine that delivers fantastic fuel efficiency.

The hybrid models of the RAV4 feature a 2.5L Dynamic Force 4-cylinder engine that offers multiple drive modes. It delivers a combined 219 hp and 176 lb-ft of torque thanks to its electric motor. This is actually a horsepower boost compared to the standard gas engine for the 2021 Toyota RAV4, and it is a lot of fun to drive, with a slick performance that feels sporty and responsive. While the gas engines come with front-wheel drive standard, the hybrid models feature electronic on-demand all-wheel drive that works perfectly with your ability to choose among different modes such as Sport, Eco, and Normal.

You get a continuously variable transmission with the hybrid models, which provides you with a smooth driving experience, and it beautifully handles the combination of power from the engine and electric motor. Of course, like most hybrid vehicles, the RAV4 Hybrid options give you excellent fuel economy that puts most other compact crossovers to shame. With its hybrid engine, these RAV4 models get an estimated 41 MPG in the city, 38 MPG on the highway, and 40 MPG combined fuel efficiency. This is a significant boost over the fuel economy of the standard engine, especially if you do a lot of city driving.

    Fantastic Off-Road Performance

Along with the fact that the 2021 Toyota RAV4 offers impressive performance and great interior features, it is a favorite among a lot of people for hitting the trail. There are two different trims that can work well for this purpose: the Adventure and the TRD Off-Road, depending on the features you are looking for. Let us take a quick look at each of them and what they have to offer.

The Adventure trim for the Toyota RAV4 includes the standard gas engine with the 8-speed automatic transmission, and it comes with Dynamic Torque Vectoring all-wheel drive. This includes numerous drive modes such as Eco and Sport, along with Multi-Terrain Select functionality that lets you adjust a dial for Mud & Sand, Rock & Dirt, or Snow modes. The Adventure also features an independent MacPherson strut front suspension and 19-inch all-season mud and snow-rated tires.

In many ways, the TRD Off-Road trim is similar to the Adventure, but with a few key differences. It also features the standard engine, transmission, and Dynamic Torque Vectoring all-wheel drive. You get the same great Multi-Terrain Select system with the TRD Off-Road and all of the same modes to choose from. This trim features a TRD-tuned independent MacPherson strut front suspension that includes unique shocks and struts designed to handle even rougher terrain than those in the Adventure. You get 19-inch Falken All-Terrain tires standard on the TRD Off-Road RAV4, along with a power tilt/slide moonroof that is available for the Adventure but not standard.
