A Brief History of the Toyota RAV4

The RAV4 was introduced in 1989 as a concept, its name an acronym for “recreational active vehicle” with four-wheel drive. Typical of Toyota’s ingenuity, the RAV4 came onto the automotive scene as the first compact SUV crossover meant to offer buyers the space and height of an SUV with the same drivability as a compact car. Sales started in Japan, and then after a few years, the RAV4 made it to the US in 1996. This first generation had an electric variant that sold less than 1,500 vehicles in California before being discontinued, while the gas-powered RAV4 gained popularity.

In 2001, the next generation completely altered its original exterior styling but acquired vehicle stability control as standard equipment in the US. Then in its third generation beginning in 2006, the RAV4 was built with its first V6 engine for more power under the hood. Toyota also added a third row when it made the RAV4 longer in this generation and once again offered an all-electric variant only in California. The second RAV4 EV was created in partnership with Tesla, but Toyota limited its production to less than 3,000 models. During this third generation, Toyota finally reached the top of the sales charts for SUVs in the US.

Fourth-generation RAV4 models were introduced in 2012 with the option for the V6 deleted, the third row removed, the swinging rear door changed to a liftgate, and they removed the rather iconic spare tire from the back. All those changes included yet another variant that’s partially electric in 2016, when Toyota offered a hybrid RAV4. For the latest generation introduced in 2019, Toyota shifted the look from a somewhat smaller crossover to a more commanding, truck-like exterior. Then in 2020, the TRD off-road variant made the RAV4 more adventurous again. Now, the RAV4 continues to be a best seller and fan-favorite for its rugged looks, hybrid capability, and overall proven capable performance.

2021 RAV4 Highlights

America has chosen the Toyota RAV4 as a class favorite over many years for good reason. The latest styling of the 2021 RAV4 takes the crossover into a bold new space that gives it a commanding presence on the road. A broader front end, dark cladding, and sharper angles give the RAV4 a distinctive new look. LED lights on the exterior, dual chrome-tipped exhaust pipes, and tinted rear windows are all standard features that give the 2021 RAV4 a sleek appearance. Driving this SUV is both insulated in comfort and exciting to handle as it performs in any weather with the standard drive modes you select for the terrain.

Though the 2021 Toyota RAV4 may be considered compact, it provides a roomy interior for passengers and cargo. Seating for five offers an expansive interior with plenty of storage for small items, charging ports for devices, and adjustments for the driver’s seat to accommodate adults of virtually any height. Touches like standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come in handy for pairing compatible phones to the infotainment system, and upper trims add a premium JBL audio system, wireless charging, and navigation. Safety is always a top priority for Toyota vehicles, and Toyota Safety Sense comes standard on all trims. This suite includes dynamic radar cruise control, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, and road sign assist. All in all, the 2021 model continues to live up to its legacy and provides an excellent experience for any driver.
